A new bipartisan nonprofit, RAISE US, is working to help American workers adapt to the changing job market due to artificial intelligence. Founded by former Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and former Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb, the group aims to pilot programs and incentives to help workers pivot to new careers in an economy that will increasingly be automated by artificial intelligence.
Addressing Job Loss Concerns
Critics warn of significant job losses due to AI, while backers say it will generate new wealth and create new job opportunities. RAISE US is starting with over $500 million to deploy on new forms of education and training, focusing on partnering with states and major employers.
The nonprofit is initially partnering with officials in Arkansas, Connecticut, Maryland, and Utah, along with several large companies and charitable organizations. The group intends to develop policies that connect schools more closely to employers, replacing layoffs with potential new jobs with higher incomes.
Expert Insights
AI experts have warned of gaps between the transformations that AI could create and the current social safety net. Neuroscientist Vivienne Ming said that the skills that matter in an AI economy go beyond professions like plumbing or construction and involve curiosity and intellectual flexibility.
Raimondo said the new nonprofit wants to use states as a vehicle for testing ideas that Congress can later embrace as policies, paving the way for more profound changes to the tax code and educational system.
