New Mexico Tech announces new president

The Board of Regents at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology has appointed Dr. Michael Jackson as the university’s 19th president following a national search that attracted more than 45 applicants. The decision completes a selection process the board described as thorough and competitive.

Jackson had been serving in campus leadership since mid-2025, first taking the role of acting president in July and then being named interim president in September. Those interim responsibilities gave him oversight of day-to-day operations and positioned him as the board’s preferred candidate for the permanent post.

Prior to stepping into the top leadership role, Jackson was provost and vice president for academic affairs at New Mexico Tech. His administrative resume also includes senior positions at Central Washington University, the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse and the University of Pennsylvania, reflecting extensive experience in higher education leadership.

Board Chair Dr. David Lepre praised Jackson’s stewardship during a challenging period for the university, noting his steady guidance and strong affinity for the institution’s mission. The chair said Jackson has shown consistent support for students, faculty, staff and researchers and that the board believes he is well prepared to lead the campus forward.

Jackson holds a Ph.D. in physics from New Mexico State University, a credential that aligns with the institution’s STEM focus and research priorities.

In accepting the presidency, Jackson said he feels honored to continue serving the campus community. He emphasized a renewed emphasis on improving the student experience, strengthening academic and research programs, and expanding opportunities that will reinforce the school’s role as a leading STEM institution for New Mexico and beyond.
