The New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame recently inducted five new members at a banquet held at the Clyde Hotel. Three of the inductees, Anita Maxwell, John Fields, and Miles Watters, were present at the celebration.
New Inductees
Anita Maxwell, considered one of the greatest New Mexico State basketball players, was thrilled to be recognized for her athletic accomplishments. John Fields, a record-setting golf coach for UNM and the University of Texas, reflected on his golf path and the honor of coaching great players. Miles Watters, who won 11 state titles with the Clayton High School girls basketball team and one more at Clovis High School, emphasized the importance of teaching players to be good people.
The other two inductees, Landry Jones and Courtney Frerichs, were unable to attend the banquet. Landry Jones is a quarterback from Artesia who won back-to-back championships in high school and had a successful career at Oklahoma. Courtney Frerichs is a long-distance runner at UNM who was an NCAA champion in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and won a silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
