Construction began this week on a new Boys & Girls Club facility in Las Cruces that organizers say will significantly expand the organization’s reach. Officials broke ground on the site during a community event, marking the start of a project intended to serve many more young people in the area.
The new center is being designed to triple the number of youth the club can support on a regular basis. That increase will allow more families to access after-school care, enrichment activities and safe, supervised space during out-of-school hours — services the club has long provided in more limited numbers.
Plans for the building include dedicated rooms for academics and tutoring, multipurpose space for sports and recreation, technology and STEM learning areas, and facilities for arts and life-skills programming. Outdoor play and exercise areas are also part of the concept, giving kids options for both structured and free play.
Program leaders say the expanded site will enable a broader schedule and a wider variety of offerings, from homework help and literacy support to career-readiness workshops and summer camps. The additional capacity is expected to help the club reach underserved neighborhoods and strengthen partnerships with local schools and community groups.
