New Haven’s Best-Kept Secret: Why the Lighthouse Point Park Carousel Will Steal Your Heart

There is a moment, just as you round the bend on Lighthouse Point Road and the Long Island Sound opens up before you, when New Haven stops feeling like a city and starts feeling like a postcard. The water catches the light, the old lighthouse stands sentinel on the rocky shore, and if you listen carefully, you can hear the faint, cheerful music of one of the most charming antique carousels in all of New England. Welcome to Lighthouse Point Park — a genuine gem tucked into the southeastern corner of New Haven that locals adore and visitors almost always discover by happy accident.

The park itself sprawls across more than 80 acres along the shores of New Haven Harbor, offering a public beach, a boat launch, picnic pavilions, and wide grassy lawns that invite you to simply drop a blanket and stay awhile. The swimming beach is clean and well-maintained, drawing families and sun-seekers from late spring through early fall. The views across the Sound toward Long Island are the kind that make you stop mid-sentence and just stare. Bring a sandwich, bring a novel, bring absolutely nothing — you will find something to do.

But the crown jewel of Lighthouse Point Park is unquestionably the carousel. Built in 1916 by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company, this magnificent machine is one of the finest examples of classic American carousel craftsmanship still operating in the country. It was fully restored in the 1990s and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Step inside the enclosed carousel building and you are immediately transported — the hand-carved horses are painted in vivid golds and reds and greens, each one a small work of art. Kids absolutely love it, but so do the adults who ride alongside them, perhaps remembering something they hadn’t thought about in years.

The carousel operates on weekends and select weekdays during the summer season, typically from Memorial Day through Labor Day, for a remarkably modest fee. It is the kind of experience that feels almost impossibly good for the price.

The neighborhood surrounding the park is quiet and residential, and the park itself has a wonderfully unpretentious atmosphere. There are no admission fees to enter the park grounds — just free, easy parking and open access to the beach and trails. The walking path along the shoreline offers excellent birdwatching, particularly during fall migration, when thousands of raptors and songbirds funnel through the coastal corridor. Birdwatchers come from across the region for this annual spectacle.

The historic lighthouse, built in 1877, adds a striking visual anchor to the whole scene. It no longer operates as an active lighthouse, but its elegant Victorian architecture makes it one of the most photographed spots in New Haven. Stroll out to the rocky point at sunset and you will understand immediately why this place has been beloved for generations.

Whether you are a first-time visitor to New Haven or a longtime resident who somehow has never made the trip out here, Lighthouse Point Park deserves a proper afternoon of your time. Pack a cooler, lace up comfortable shoes, and let yourself slow down for a few hours. The carousel will be waiting — spinning, gleaming, and playing its bright, unhurried music just as it has for more than a century.
