New Haven Voters Assigned to Wrong State House Districts

Hundreds of New Haven voters were assigned to the wrong state House districts, according to an analysis by the Secretary of the State’s office. The error affected at least 432 addresses and 744 registered voters across the city.

Local Impact

One of the affected voters, Fair Haven Alder Sarah Miller, discovered in early May that she had unwittingly voted in the wrong state House district in 2022 and 2024. Miller, who lives on Clinton Avenue, was assigned to vote in the 97th District, despite being located in the 95th District.

The error was caused by outdated voter registration information, which was not updated after the state adopted new district maps in 2021. The local Registrar of Voters’ office is responsible for updating voter addresses, but it appears that the office failed to do so in a timely manner.

Response from Officials

U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro, who was also affected by the error, referred questions to the local Registrar of Voters’ office. Matthew Clyburn, a spokesperson for the Secretary of the State’s office, stated that the local Registrar of Voters’ office is responsible for updating voter addresses and that the corrections were made at some point between November 2025 and May 5, 2026.

Miller has called for an analysis of how the error occurred and a plan for informing other impacted voters. She has also asked for a list of the errors and the dates of corresponding corrections.
