New Haven United FC Wins 2-1

New Haven United FC returned to its home field Wednesday, earning a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Santa Cruz FC in a physical and closely contested match at Yale’s Reese Stadium on Central Avenue.

Conference Standings

With the victory, New Haven United FC moved into second place in the conference, earning three valuable points and leapfrogging Santa Cruz FC in the standings in the National Premier Soccer League’s North Atlantic Conference.

Head coach Kledis Capollari praised his team’s resilience and determination, emphasizing the importance of securing points against a direct conference rival as the season enters a critical mid-season stretch.

“Togetherness and intensity,” Capollari said about Wednesday’s win. “We knew that they were a good team, but it was about sticking together.”

New Haven United FC came out of the gate firing on all cylinders Wednesday. Just four minutes into the match, returning player Preston Alessio opened the scoring with a well-placed strike that found the bottom-right corner of the net, giving New Haven an early 1–0 advantage and setting the tone for the rest of the contest.

The first half was marked by a physical and highly competitive battle, with both teams matching each other’s intensity. Santa Cruz FC remained aggressive in attack and continued to apply pressure throughout the half. Their persistence paid off in the 40th minute when they found the back of the net, leveling the score and shifting momentum heading into halftime.

New Haven, however, responded well after the break and regained control of the match. The defending conference champions continued to create chances in the attacking third, and their efforts were rewarded with a second goal that restored their lead at 2–1.

The go-ahead goal ultimately proved to be the difference. New Haven’s defense and goalkeeper Christian Rodriguez made sure the lead would stand.

With four minutes of stoppage time added, Santa Cruz FC pushed forward in search of an equalizer, creating several dangerous scoring opportunities. Rodriguez remained calm under pressure, delivering two crucial saves in the closing moments and turning away multiple Santa Cruz attempts. His composure and shot-stopping ability preserved New Haven’s 2–1 advantage and helped secure a hard-fought victory at Reese Stadium.

“We lost to them two weeks ago, so this game was personal for us,” Rodriguez said after the game. “We know what kind of team we are. We’re one of the best teams in the league, and tonight we proved it.”

Team Growth

For head coach Capollari, Wednesday’s victory was about more than just three points in the standings. It was another sign of growth from a young team that continues to find its identity.

With 18 new players on the roster and the distinction of being the youngest squad in the league, Capollari has watched his team embrace challenges and mature with each match.

Wednesday’s performance showcased the resilience, chemistry, and determination that have become trademarks of the defending conference champions.

While the result moved New Haven into second place, Capollari’s focus remains on the bigger picture—continuing to develop his players, build consistency, and prepare the team for another deep postseason run.
