Dontae James, a senior at Wilbur Cross High School in New Haven, performed a rendition of ‘Lift Every Voice and Sing’ at his school’s graduation ceremony. James, who will be attending The Juilliard School, was accompanied by a mixed-grade vocal ensemble and played the saxophone.
A Passion for Music
James’ love for music began in the fifth grade when he started playing the alto saxophone. He has since become an integral member of the school’s jazz and concert bands and has received extensive mentorship from musician and composer Will Cleary.
James worked with band director Eric Teichman and Principal Matt Brown to make the performance a reality. The arrangement, written by Craig Courtney, featured James on saxophone and a vocal ensemble made up of his peers.
The performance was a testament to the expansive learning that happens within the school’s walls and the teachers who push students to sharpen their creative edges. James’ passion for music and his dedication to his craft have made him a role model for his peers.
