The City Plan Commission has approved a Science Park redeveloper’s application to build a new 199-space surface parking lot where a handful of dilapidated former Winchester Arms factory buildings were recently demolished.
Replacement Parking
According to Science Park Development Corporation (SPDC) Chairman and CEO David Silverstone, this new parking lot will replace an existing 199-space parking lot right across the street — a site his company plans to build up into new labs, offices, or housing.
The commissioners voted unanimously in support of both the site plan and the Class C soil erosion and sediment control plan for the SPDC’s bid to construct a 199-space paved parking lot at 275 Winchester Ave.
Demolition and Development
The demolition site is right next door to the 158-unit Winchester Lofts apartment complex, the new 281-unit Winston apartment complex, and the Winchester Works office space.
Silverstone said that the creation of this planned new 199-space surface parking lot is designed to replace an existing 199-space surface parking lot right across Munson Street, on what is known as Tract J.
During the public hearing portion of the meeting, Prospect Street resident Carl Jackson expressed his concerns about the new parking lot, asking the redevelopers to install screening or landscaping that makes the parking lot “more presentable.”
