New Express and Pedestrian Lanes Open on Howard Frankland Bridge

The Howard Frankland Bridge, a vital connection between St. Petersburg and Tampa, has unveiled new express and pedestrian lanes, marking a significant milestone in a project that began over six years ago. Early Wednesday, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) opened the new northbound express lanes on I-275, extending from 4th Street North in St. Petersburg to just north of the bridge in Tampa. These lanes are strategically positioned in the median of I-275, separated by barrier walls and flexible plastic poles, ensuring a smoother and more efficient commute.

Pedestrian and Cyclist Access

In addition to the express lanes, the bridge now features a nearly seven-mile pedestrian path, offering a 12-foot shared-use space for pedestrians and cyclists. This path stretches from Tampa, near Cypress Point Park, to 4th Street North in St. Petersburg, providing access from both sides. On the Tampa side, the path can be accessed via Reo Street, while in Pinellas County, the 4th Street North flyover bridge serves as the entry point. The pathway includes several lookout points equipped with benches and shade, enhancing the experience for users.

Future Developments

Currently, the express lanes are free during the testing phase, with future tolls set at $0.50. These tolls will be collected electronically around the clock using SunPass or other Florida-compatible transponders, as cash and TOLL-BY-PLATE options are not available. The southbound express lanes are anticipated to open in the coming nights, contingent on weather conditions.

This development underscores the ongoing commitment to improving transportation infrastructure in Florida, enhancing both vehicular and pedestrian connectivity across the region.
