Jon and Shelley Vanderglas are set to open New Enon Brewing this weekend, bringing a new craft lager-focused brewery to Enon, Ohio. The grand opening is scheduled for Saturday, May 23, at 160 N. Xenia Drive, starting at 11 a.m. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
A Community Gathering Place
The Vanderglas couple aims to create more than just a business; they envision a community hub where locals can gather and connect. The taproom is designed to be family-friendly and encourages personal interaction by intentionally excluding televisions. “The idea is simple: put down your phone, pick up a pint and talk to the person next to you,” Jon Vanderglas explained.
New Enon Brewing’s focus on craft lagers sets it apart, as lagers often don’t receive the attention they deserve in the craft beer industry. Vanderglas, who has been brewing for over 33 years, is eager to showcase the nuanced flavors of lagers, which he believes are often overshadowed by mass-produced beers.
Local Roots and Development
Jon Vanderglas, an Enon native, returned to the area in 2007 with his wife to be closer to family. After years of planning and property searching, they decided to develop the brewery on their own property, which is conveniently located less than a mile from Interstate 70. The couple built a new structure while preserving elements of the original building, such as the timber frame and stone.
In addition to their craft lagers, New Enon Brewing will offer wine, cider, and meads, pending liquor and wine license approval. The brewery also plans to host food trucks, providing power and water access for vendors, and will feature snacks for patrons.
Opening Day Festivities
The grand opening will feature a cornhole tournament at 1 p.m., with limited team slots available, and the first tapping of their Helles lager at 2 p.m. The first 20 guests will receive a commemorative pint glass and sticker. Christian Brothers Meats food truck will be present, with potential for additional vendors throughout the day. Jon Vanderglas will be available to discuss the brewery’s journey and the craft of brewing.
