Joint Base San Antonio has a new commander, Brig. Gen. David J. Wilson, who has taken the helm after a change of command ceremony on Friday. Wilson replaces Brig. Gen. Randy P. Oakland, who retired from 30 years of Air Force service after leading the base for two years.

Wilson emphasized the importance of teamwork and respect in his new role, stating, “We will cultivate a culture of respect and professionalism by being empathetic, connected, and present. How are we going to do all this? Teamwork.” He also acknowledged the challenges the base will face, saying, “We will face challenging opportunities each and every day. Many of them will be unpredictable.”
The 502nd Air Base Wing, which Wilson now commands, is the largest wing in Joint Base San Antonio, with over 8,000 personnel. The joint base as a whole is home to more than 80,000 full-time personnel across Fort Sam Houston, Lackland, Randolph, and Camp Bullis.
Recent Changes and Developments
During the last two years, Joint Base San Antonio has undergone significant changes, including the loss of Army North and South, which were relocated to Fort Bragg as part of the Pentagon’s effort to streamline military operations. The base has also assumed control of a National Defense Area along the U.S.-Mexico border, which was expanded in February.
City leaders are now attempting to lure the Defense Health Agency (DHA) to San Antonio, hoping to make up for the loss of several hundred jobs associated with the relocation of Army North and South. The DHA headquarters is currently located in Falls Church, Virginia.
