New Braunfels families have a new resource for their children after the school bell rings. The Mill Street Youth Center, housed in the historic New Braunfels High School building, opened this spring after a $16 million renovation aimed at creating a safe, technology‑free gathering place for students in grades six through twelve.
Free programs for a critical age
Executive Director Stacey Dicke says the center already welcomes more than 200 students each day. “We’ve had over 200 students every day coming into the facility, and they participate in everything,” she told local reporters. The center’s schedule includes games, cooking classes, music sessions, sports, and, beginning this school year, a complimentary after‑school tutoring program.
Dicke explained that the center was designed to address the loneliness, anxiety and isolation many teens experience. “We talk a lot about this age group: that they’re lonely, that they have high anxiety, that they don’t know how to communicate, that they are isolated,” she said. “But what we’ve seen is when they get inside this facility, all of that goes away.”
Students share their experiences
Seventh‑grader Elyana Wolf described the center as a place where there is always “something to do” and where she can spend time with friends or staff members. “It’s not just, like, one thing to do,” Wolf said. “There’s multiple things to do, and you’ll always find yourself doing something with other people.”
For many families, the center offers a welcome alternative to screen time. By providing structured activities and adult supervision, it gives parents peace of mind that their children are in a supportive environment while they finish work or attend to other responsibilities.
Community support and future plans
The Mill Street Youth Center is operated by the New Braunfels Youth Collaborative, a newly formed nonprofit that describes the facility as the first‑of‑its‑kind teen center for the community. Funding comes from a mix of local businesses, nonprofits and private donors. The collaborative invites anyone who wishes to help support the mission to contribute through its website.
Looking ahead, the center plans to expand its tutoring services, add more vocational workshops and strengthen partnerships with local schools and churches. By doing so, it hopes to further reinforce the values of family, faith and personal responsibility that are central to the New Braunfels community.
