Los Angeles – The beloved “Avatar: The Last Airbender” universe is set to grow with a brand‑new animated prequel, “Avatar Kuruk: Wave of Chaos,” announced Friday at New York Comic Con.
Series co‑creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko revealed that the show will follow a teenage Avatar named Kuruk and his companion, Nikik, as they navigate a world of angry teachers, rowdy pirates and chaotic spirits while striving to help the world in their own unique ways.
Production and streaming details
Skydance, the studio behind the project, confirmed that “Avatar Kuruk: Wave of Chaos” will be released exclusively on Paramount+. No specific premiere date has been set, but the announcement signals continued investment in the franchise’s expansion.
Franchise background
The original series, celebrated for its Asian‑inspired world divided into four elemental nations, follows an Avatar who can bend water, fire, earth and air to maintain balance. It has already spawned two sequels, “The Legend of Korra” and “Avatar: Seven Havens,” the latter recently renewed for two additional seasons.
DiMartino and Konietzko previously worked on a live‑action adaptation for Netflix before parting ways with the streamer in 2020 over creative differences. In 2021 they partnered with Nickelodeon to launch Avatar Studios, a dedicated unit focused on expanding the original series through new films and television projects.
Fans can look forward to the first look at Kuruk and his pet, Nikik, at the convention, and anticipate further details as the series moves closer to production.
