Researchers in New Albany are working to uncover a piece of American history that has been hidden for over a century. The Lost Jones Burying Ground, a cemetery believed to have served the early frontier town of Providence, Indiana, is thought to lie beneath three residential properties in the city.

Search Efforts

Using ground-penetrating radar, researchers from Omega Mapping Services have been scanning the area to locate potential burial shafts. The survey is being conducted without digging or disturbing the ground, and the goal is to map the area and verify the existence of the cemetery.

Historians believe that the cemetery includes the grave of Epaphras Jones, a Revolutionary War veteran who spent the last 25 years of his life in Floyd County. The cemetery eventually fell into disrepair before the land was sold and later divided into residential lots where homes now stand.

Homeowner Dennis Jensen, who has lived on the property for 10 years, said human remains have previously been found on the site. Despite this, he believes that those buried at the site should be treated with respect and left to rest in peace.

Project Support

The project has received support from the Indiana250 Commission, the Floyd County Historical Society, and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. The researchers hope that the radar survey will provide additional evidence to help document and preserve the historic burial ground.
