The Alamo Colleges District is moving to make higher‑education and workforce training more accessible to families in north Bexar County. A new Northwest Education and Training Center, part of Northwest Vista College, is under construction just south of Boerne along the Boerne Stage Road corridor near Interstate 10.
Location and size
The 42,000‑square‑foot facility will sit near several gated communities, offering a convenient alternative to the current 24‑mile commute to the main Northwest Vista campus. The center is slated to open its first phase in fall 2027 and will initially serve roughly 800 students.
Why the new center matters
College leaders say transportation has long been a major barrier for students across San Antonio. “We know that transportation is a huge barrier to education across San Antonio,” said Amy Bosley, president of Northwest Vista College. “Being able to locate educational opportunities closer to people’s homes and work is really what will expand opportunity for so many more of our neighbors.”
Northwest Vista has already seen an 81 % increase in enrollment from Kendall County students, underscoring the demand for nearby options. The new center will offer a range of programs, from GED and English‑as‑a‑Second‑Language classes to college‑level courses that count toward bachelor’s degrees. It will also provide workforce credentials, including IT certification pathways.
Community response
While some nearby residents have voiced concerns about additional traffic, many see the center as a boon for families. “For me, that’s the part that I think is most attractive,” said local resident Kelly Rawlings, referring to his children. “If they had the opportunity to go and get ahead faster and develop their minds, that would be cool.”
Funding and future growth
The $22.5 million project was approved by Bexar County voters in 2017 as part of a broader funding package for Alamo Colleges facilities. In 2025, voters also approved construction of a second building on the site, signaling confidence that enrollment demand will continue to rise.
When the first phase opens, the center will lay the groundwork for further expansion, ensuring that north‑west San Antonio residents have a local gateway to higher education and skilled‑trade training.
What’s next
Construction is progressing on schedule, and district officials anticipate that the center will begin classes on time in fall 2027. As the project moves forward, community leaders will monitor traffic impacts and work with local officials to address any concerns while keeping the focus on expanding educational opportunity for the region’s growing families.
