Nevada voter rolls shrink by over 50,000 in August, Secretary of State says

State officials announced a notable decline in Nevada’s active voter rolls for August 2026. According to Secretary of State Francisco Aguilar, the total number of active registered voters at the end of the month stood at 2,062,136, down 50,130 from July – a 2.37% reduction.

Why the numbers fell

The Secretary of State’s Office attributes the decrease primarily to voter‑roll maintenance. Routine checks remove individuals who have moved, passed away, or otherwise become ineligible, ensuring the integrity of the state’s electoral lists.

Breakdown by party affiliation

All affiliation groups experienced losses. Nonpartisan voters saw the largest decline, dropping by 18,791. Democratic registrations fell by 14,168, while Republican registrations slipped by 13,003. Smaller parties were not immune: the Independent American Party lost 2,657 voters, the Libertarian Party of Nevada shed 479, and other minor parties combined lost 1,032.

Current composition of Nevada’s electorate

Despite the overall drop, the partisan balance remains closely matched. Of the 2,062,136 active voters:

  • 796,805 are nonpartisan (38.64%)
  • 569,337 are Democrats (27.61%)
  • 568,665 are Republicans (27.58%)
  • 82,903 belong to the Independent American Party (4.02%)
  • 13,620 are Libertarians (0.66%)
  • 30,806 are registered with other minor parties (1.49%)

The near‑parity between Democratic and Republican registrations underscores Nevada’s status as a competitive swing state, where each party’s outreach and voter‑engagement efforts remain crucial.

What this means for upcoming elections

With the 2026 midterm elections on the horizon, the Secretary of State’s office encourages eligible Nevadans to verify their registration status and update any changes. Maintaining accurate rolls helps prevent disenfranchisement and supports a fair voting process, a cornerstone of our constitutional democracy.

Citizens can check their registration online through the Nevada Secretary of State’s portal or contact local election offices for assistance. The office also reminds voters that Nevada allows same‑day registration at early‑voting sites, providing an additional avenue for participation.

Looking ahead

While the August decline reflects normal maintenance, officials will continue to monitor registration trends closely. Any significant shifts will be reported promptly, ensuring transparency and confidence in Nevada’s electoral system.
