Every Nevada household has that one tale that grows richer with each retelling. To preserve those memories for future generations, Nevada Day Inc. is launching a statewide call for submissions to a digital time capsule.
How to participate
Families are asked to send in a short narrative describing a favorite “tall tale”—whether it recounts a legendary road trip across the desert, a quirky family prank, a historic Nevada tradition, or a strange encounter in the high desert. Submissions may be wholly true, mostly true, or a blend of fact and family‑grown embellishment; organizers want the authentic voice of Nevada’s households.
Each entry should include the name of the original storyteller, the specific Nevada location where the event occurred, and the generation that first heard the story. Participants can also upload a photo or scanned document that illustrates the anecdote.
Submission details
Stories can be submitted online at NevadaDay.com/time-capsule-america-250. The deadline for entries is October 30, giving ample time before the Nevada Day Parade on Saturday, Oct. 31, in Carson City.
Why the time capsule matters
President of the Nevada Day Board of Directors Jennell Peck explains, “Nevada has history, and Nevada has legends, but many of our best stories have never been written down. They live in our families. Whether the story is true, mostly true, or has changed a little over the years, those are exactly the stories we want to save.” The project is part of the broader From America 250 to America 300 initiative, which began on July 4, 2026, to capture a snapshot of life across the nation during the country’s 250th anniversary year.
Peck adds that the goal is to give future Nevadans a vivid glimpse into everyday life in 2026. “Years from now, someone will open this time capsule and find out what Nevada families were talking about in 2026,” she says. “Let’s give them something worth reading. So come on, Nevada, tell us your tall tale!”
Community impact
The digital capsule will be stored alongside contributions from sponsors, businesses, veterans groups, school classrooms, and individual citizens. By gathering a diverse array of personal histories, the project aims to reflect the cultural tapestry of the Silver State—its pioneers, its humor, and its enduring love of storytelling.
Residents who submit stories will see their contributions preserved for future generations and may have the chance to share their narrative during the Nevada Day Parade festivities, which this year celebrate the theme “Pumpkins, Pioneers & Tall Tales.”
Looking ahead
When the capsule is eventually opened, it will serve as a time‑traveling window into the hopes, challenges, and everyday joys of Nevada families in 2026. Until then, the state invites every household to add its voice to this historic record.
