NCAA Approves Automated Balls‑Strike System for 2027 College Baseball Season

The NCAA announced Tuesday that the automated balls‑strike (ABS) system will be permitted for use across all three collegiate baseball divisions starting with the 2027 season. The decision was made after the Division I Baseball Oversight Committee and the Division II and III Playing Rules Oversight Panel convened and voted to give programs the option to challenge ball‑strike calls in both regular‑season and postseason contests.

ABS technology, first trialed by Major League Baseball in its minor leagues in 2019 and fully adopted at the major‑league level for the 2026 season, now moves into the college arena. The system will be available to programs that have the equipment installed; it does not require schools to adopt the technology if they lack the resources.

How the System Works

Under the new rule, pitchers, catchers and batters may request a review of a ball‑strike call shortly after the umpire’s decision. The review does not replace the home‑plate umpire; rather, it provides an additional check to help ensure the correct call. Coaches and players in the SEC, which piloted ABS during its 2026 tournament in Hoover, praised the technology, noting that while there are still “kinks to work out,” the system helps reduce human error.

Additional Rule Changes for 2027

Alongside ABS, the NCAA introduced several other rule updates for the 2027 season:

  • A double first base will be required for all games.
  • The number of offensive conferences per game increases to six.
  • Teams may challenge whether a batted ball landed foul or fair.
  • A 30‑second timer will be enforced between batters, mound visits and offensive timeouts.
  • Base paths may be 18 inches instead of the standard 15, though this is optional.

Pitching regulations also change: pitchers must face at least three batters unless the inning ends beforehand, and they will be allowed only two disengagements per batter. A third disengagement will be ruled a balk unless it results in an out.

Local Impact and Outlook

While the rule change is national in scope, its implementation will affect local programs throughout Alabama and the broader United States. Schools that can afford the technology may gain a competitive edge, while others can continue with traditional umpiring. The NCAA’s approach respects both innovation and the tradition of baseball, offering flexibility for institutions of varying size and budget.

Fans, coaches and players alike will be watching the 2027 season closely to see how ABS influences game flow, accuracy and overall enjoyment of college baseball.
