The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV) is set to launch a new mobile ID program in December 2026, allowing residents to store a secure digital version of their driver’s license or state ID on their smartphones.
How it Works
To obtain a mobile ID, users will need to download the NC Wallet, scan their physical driver’s license or ID, and take a selfie. After their information is verified, a mobile ID will be issued directly to their NC wallet.
Mobile IDs will be accepted at TSA checkpoints, including RDU and Charlotte Douglas International Airport, as well as at all NCDMV locations. Police officers will also be able to accept mobile IDs using a secure reader.
The initiative is part of the NCDMV’s System Modernization effort, which aims to tackle long lines and outdated systems. A vendor was selected in March 2026 to help with the tech overhaul.
