The NBA announced that the Summer League will feature a new rule, where one free throw is awarded for certain fouls, in an effort to speed up the game.
Rule Details
The rule, which has been used in the G League since the 2019-20 season, will replace the traditional two or three free throws for certain fouls, with a single free throw attempt worth the same total number of points.
However, standard free-throw rules will still apply for the last two minutes of fourth quarters and in all of overtime.
The Summer League, which begins on July 9, has been a testing ground for potential rule changes in the NBA, with previous experiments including the coach’s challenge and resetting the 24-second shot clock to 14 seconds after offensive rebounds.
