The US Navy says more to come after an explosion during a ship trial shook Ponce Inlet. The U.S. Geological Survey recorded a magnitude 3.9 shake Thursday off the coast of Ponce Inlet, terming it an “experimental explosion”.
Full Ship Shock Trial
A spokesperson for the U.S. Navy explained what a Full Ship Shock Trial (FSST) is. “FSST validates a ship’s shock hardness and ability to sustain operations in a simulated combat environment using live ordnance. These trials are complex evolutions, conducted during a precise operating schedule in compliance with exacting environmental and safety requirements,” the spokesperson said.
According to the statement, Thursday’s shock trial had to do with the future USS Ted Stevens (DDG 128). The ship — a Flight III destroyer named after the late Ted Stevens, U.S. Senator from Alaska and a decorated World War II Army Air Corps veteran — had arrived at its Naval Station Norfolk homeport for the first time in May, the Navy’s website states.
The Navy spokesperson’s statement continued, explaining that the test was a success and that a second test will occur “in approximately two weeks.”
