Lincoln, R.I. – On Tuesday, Navigant Credit Union brought together over 700 high‑school juniors and seniors from across Rhode Island for a day‑long “Reality Fair” aimed at teaching practical financial skills. The event, held at the Kirkbrae Country Club, gave students a realistic glimpse into the financial responsibilities they will face as adults.
Hands‑on budgeting experience
Participants were each assigned a fictional career and corresponding income level. From there, they worked through a detailed worksheet that required them to allocate funds for housing, transportation, food, insurance, savings, and other essential expenses. The exercise also incorporated state and federal taxes, as well as Medicaid and Medicare contributions, to reflect the full cost of living.
Credit union educators guide the way
“It’s really about uncovering how much they can actually afford every single month and paying their bills on time,” said Amanda LaRose, assistant vice president of financial education at Navigant Credit Union. LaRose explained that the worksheet broke down each expense category, helping students see how taxes and mandatory deductions affect take‑home pay.
Broad participation from schools and nonprofits
Ten local high schools and one nonprofit organization took part in the fair, underscoring the community’s commitment to financial literacy. The 90‑minute program was designed to be both educational and engaging, allowing students to make real‑time decisions and see the immediate impact of their choices.
Why financial education matters
Financial responsibility is a cornerstone of strong families and thriving neighborhoods—values that align with the mission of both the credit union and the broader community. By equipping young people with budgeting tools early, Navigant hopes to reduce future debt, encourage savings, and foster a generation that can manage money wisely.
Looking ahead
Navigant Credit Union plans to expand the Reality Fair to additional schools in the coming years, aiming to reach even more students throughout the state. The credit union’s continued investment in youth financial education reflects its dedication to building a financially secure future for Rhode Island families.
