Navajo Nation Gets $75M for Clean Water Project

The Navajo Nation is getting $75 million to advance a clean water project. The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation awarded a $75.5 million construction contract for a major phase of the Navajo-Gallup Water Supply Project.

Project Details

The contract covers construction of the Block 2-3 Pipeline Horizontal Directional Drilling components in northwestern New Mexico. The Block 2-3 pipeline segment begins at the Frank Chee Willetto Reservoir, located approximately 17 miles east of Shiprock, and extends to the San Juan Lateral Water Treatment Plant, currently under construction in the Hogback Chapter area of San Juan County.

Federal officials said the award is part of a broader effort to accelerate progress on the long-running project, which is intended to provide reliable drinking water to communities across the Navajo Nation, as well as the city of Gallup, New Mexico.

Construction under the new contract is scheduled to begin in summer 2026 and continue through fall 2028. The project includes four major underground crossings beneath environmentally sensitive areas and culturally significant Navajo sites, including Shumway Arroyo, the San Juan River, Nenahnezad Hill, and the Chaco River.
