Casper, Wyoming – As Halloween approaches, the YMCA of Natrona County celebrated its ninth annual Pumpkin Plunge, turning the pool into a sea of orange pumpkins and offering a festive day for families across the community.
From humble beginnings to a community tradition
Senior Aquatics Director Stephanie Clark‑Sleep recalled that the first Pumpkin Plunge took place nine years ago in the old YMCA building, with just 30 participants and a handful of pumpkins donated by locals. “We didn’t expect it to become what it is today,” she said.
Since then, the event has grown dramatically. Clark‑Sleep noted that attendance jumped from a few dozen to three or four hundred participants, especially after the COVID‑19 pause when the community craved safe, outdoor‑adjacent activities.
Day‑long festivities
The celebration began with the annual Jack O’Lantern Jog 5K race, inviting runners of all ages to don Halloween costumes and jog through a course lined with carved pumpkins. After the race, families gathered at the YMCA pool, where volunteers handed out donated pumpkins to children who might not otherwise have one.
“We appreciate the ability to provide something fun and safe for the community members,” Clark‑Sleep said. “We really want to do outreach where our community can come in, regardless if they’re adults or children, and have something fun to do.”
Participants swam, splashed, and posed for photos with the floating pumpkins, creating a memorable backdrop for holiday pictures. The event also offered a chance for newcomers to tour the YMCA facilities in a relaxed, family‑friendly setting.
Community impact and future growth
Clark‑Sleep described the Pumpkin Plunge as “her baby since the beginning,” emphasizing its role in fostering community bonds. She highlighted that the event not only provides entertainment but also showcases the YMCA’s commitment to safe, wholesome recreation.
“You don’t have to be a kid to enjoy the pumpkins and costumes in the pool,” she added. “Adults can join in the fun, too.”
Local businesses and volunteers contributed pumpkins and supplies, reinforcing the collaborative spirit that has become a hallmark of the event. Organizers hope the tradition will continue to expand, offering even more families the chance to celebrate Halloween in a safe, supportive environment.
Looking ahead
With the success of this year’s Pumpkin Plunge, the YMCA plans to maintain the event as an annual staple, encouraging more families to participate and strengthening its role as a hub for wholesome community activities.
