Natrona County, Wyoming, is considering a proposal to place a 2% lodging tax renewal on the November general election ballot. The tax, which has been in place since 1989, is paid by visiting travelers rather than local residents.
Benefits of the Tax
According to Visit Casper CEO Annette Pitts, the tax has consistently been supported by Natrona County voters and has helped fund local organizations and community projects. In the 2026 fiscal year, Visit Casper reinvested over $800,000 back into the area through sponsorships and grants for youth sports, local festivals, and nonprofits.
The tax also helped net about $300,000 in combined grants and destination development funds to restore the historic Hell’s Half Acre site. Commissioners spoke favorably of the tax during the meeting, with Commissioner Dave North praising the agency for its work on the Hell’s Half Acre restoration.
Commissioner Support
Commissioner Dallas Laird backed the proposition because it relies directly on voter approval. Commissioner Peter Nicolaysen urged voters to back the measure, citing its low financial impact on local residents. Chair Jim Milne said the benefits of the tax outweigh any drawbacks because local residents are not the primary payers.
The Natrona County Clerk’s Office will prepare a formal resolution for approval at a future meeting to place the proposition on the November ballot.
