Nationwide Recall of Squishy Dumpling Toys Over Choking and Ingestion Hazards

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a dual recall affecting more than 15,000 popular squishy dumpling toys sold nationwide. The first recall covers 8,000 units of the GIHNJSI Squeezy Dumplings, translucent round toys with cartoon faces, glitter‑like particles and water beads inside. The second recall involves 7,200 Rainbow Mystery Squishy Bun toys, also translucent with glitter and water beads.

Why the toys are dangerous

Both products contain water beads that expand when they come into contact with moisture. The CPSC warned that if a child ingests these beads, they can swell to a size that blocks the airway or intestines, leading to severe discomfort, vomiting, dehydration, and in extreme cases, death. No injuries have been reported to date, but the agency emphasized the potential for a fatal outcome.

Recall details and how to get a refund

GIHNJSI Squeezy Dumplings were sold on Amazon between May and June 2026 for roughly $20 each. They are packaged in tan plastic containers shaped like bamboo steamers, marked with “Squeezy Dumplings” and “Squeeze Me” on a removable label. Consumers who purchased these toys should stop using them immediately, write the word “RECALLED” in permanent marker on the toy and its container, discard the items, and email a photo of the disposed toy to [email protected] for a full refund.

Rainbow Mystery Squishy Bun toys (Model D08004) were sold at various third‑party stores nationwide from May through August 2026. They are pink, translucent, and feature cartoon faces and glitter. The packaging mirrors the Squeezy Dumplings design. Owners should follow the same disposal steps and email a photo of the discarded toy to [email protected] to receive a refund from OKK Trading.

Amazon’s proactive removal and broader safety concerns

In August, Amazon informed Hearst Television’s National Consumer Unit that it had already removed similar squishy toys from its marketplace after safety concerns were raised. The CPSC also issued a warning about counterfeit and fake squishy toys that may not meet federal safety standards and could contain harmful chemicals, though it did not specify which brands were affected.

Consumer Reports has urged the CPSC to broaden its investigation to the entire category of sensory gel toys. An analysis of the agency’s SaferProducts.gov database revealed 33 incidents between January 2025 and July 2026 involving chemical burns, skin irritation, strong odors, nausea, headaches, watery eyes, or sore throats. While those reports did not involve the recalled dumpling toys, they highlight a growing safety issue within the broader market.

What parents should know

Parents and caregivers are encouraged to check any squishy toys in their homes for water beads or similar expanding materials. Even if a toy appears harmless, the hidden beads can become a serious health risk if swallowed. Promptly removing these items and following the recall instructions helps protect children and prevents potential tragedies.
