Nationals sign right‑hander Cade Cavalli to four‑year extension

Washington, D.C. – The Washington Nationals announced Friday that they have reached a four‑year contract extension with right‑hander Cade Cavalli, adding a club option for the 2031 season. The agreement is reported to be worth roughly $47 million, and if the option is exercised the total value could climb to $70 million over five seasons.

Owner praises Cavalli’s character and talent

Managing principal owner Mark D. Lerner issued a statement expressing enthusiasm for the deal. “We are thrilled that Cade and his family will remain part of the Washington Nationals for years to come,” Lerner said. “Since we drafted Cade in 2020, we’ve been continually impressed with who he is as a baseball player and as a human being. He’s shown that he not only has the talent to excel as a Major Leaguer, but he also possesses the high character and leadership qualities that make him a beloved member of our clubhouse and in the community.”

Cavalli’s comeback after injury

Cavalli, 28, is enjoying a breakthrough season after a series of arm setbacks. He underwent Tommy John surgery in March 2023 and missed the entire 2023 and 2024 campaigns. He returned late in the 2025 season, making ten starts and showing enough promise to earn a regular rotation spot.

This year, Cavalli has made 31 starts, posting a 12‑5 record with a 3.12 earned‑run average (ERA). He ranks fourth in the National League with 194 strikeouts and has posted a 1.17 WHIP over 164 2/3 innings. In his 42 career starts for Washington, he is 15‑7 with a 3.60 ERA, highlighting his effectiveness when healthy.

What the extension means for the club

The extension secures a young, high‑upside arm for the Nationals as they continue to rebuild and aim for competitiveness in the coming years. By locking in Cavalli before he reaches free agency, the organization avoids a potentially costly market for a proven starter and demonstrates confidence in his continued development.

Fans can look forward to seeing Cavalli on the mound Friday night when he is slated to start against the St. Louis Cardinals, a game that will further showcase his role in the rotation.

Looking ahead

With the contract in place, the Nationals can focus on complementing Cavalli’s talent with complementary pieces on the roster. The front office’s willingness to invest in a player who has overcome adversity aligns with the club’s broader strategy of building a resilient, character‑driven team.

As the season progresses, Cavalli’s performance will be a key factor in the Nationals’ push for a playoff berth, and the extension provides both the player and the organization with stability and mutual commitment.
