National violent and property crime rates decline in 2025, FBI data shows

The latest figures from the FBI’s Crime Data Explorer (CDE) reveal a notable drop in crime across the United States between December 2024 and November 2025. All tracked categories showed a year‑over‑year reduction, bringing national crime rates to their lowest levels in decades after a peak in the early 1990s.

Key national trends

According to the FBI data, violent crime fell by 10.0% overall, while property crime declined by 12.1% overall during the same period. A separate report from the Council on Criminal Justice (CCJ), which examined 40 major U.S. cities through 2025, largely corroborated these findings. Of the 13 offense categories the CCJ studied, 11 showed declines from 2024 to 2025. The only category that rose was drug‑related offenses, which increased by 7%, and sexual assault remained flat.

Potential drivers of the decline

CCJ researchers point to several societal shifts that may be contributing to the downward trend. Data shows a steady reduction in alcohol consumption, a sharp decline in drug‑overdose deaths, younger people spending more time at home, and an increase in cashless transactions. Each of these factors could plausibly reduce opportunities for aggression, violent encounters, and robberies.

While these correlations are compelling, researchers caution against attributing the decline to any single cause. Crime rates are influenced by a complex mix of socioeconomic conditions, public‑health trends, and local policing practices.

Limitations of the data

It is important to recognize that official statistics capture only crimes reported to law‑enforcement agencies. The Bureau of Justice Statistics’ National Crime Victimization Survey, which includes unreported incidents, does not always align with FBI figures, underscoring that no single source provides a complete picture.

Additionally, the FBI’s transition to the National Incident‑Based Reporting System (NIBRS) created coverage gaps in 2024, with major cities such as New York, Jacksonville, and Atlanta not submitting data that year. Consequently, the national totals may not fully reflect activity in those jurisdictions.

What this means for local communities

Although the national trend is encouraging, public safety can vary widely from one neighborhood to another. Local factors—such as the number of officers on patrol, community health conditions, and municipal resources—play a crucial role in shaping crime rates at the city and county level.

Residents seeking a clearer picture of safety in their own area should consult their local police department’s website for monthly incident reports or use reputable online tools that aggregate crime data for specific neighborhoods.

Looking ahead

If the FBI’s forthcoming nationwide data confirms these patterns, the U.S. homicide rate could fall to around four per 100,000 residents, the lowest level recorded in over a century of national tracking.

Continued monitoring of these trends will be essential for policymakers, law‑enforcement leaders, and community members as they work together to sustain and build upon the progress made in reducing crime across the country.
