National Hurricane Center monitors three Atlantic systems as season peaks

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) released its 8 a.m. Sunday tropical outlook, highlighting three separate areas of potential development in the Atlantic Ocean as the hurricane season approaches its peak. While the outlook does not focus on any single community, the information is vital for residents along the Atlantic seaboard, island territories, and anyone planning travel or outdoor activities in the coming days.

Wave moving off Africa

The first system is a tropical wave expected to emerge from the west coast of Africa on Monday. The NHC notes that environmental conditions are only marginally conducive for development, but a tropical depression could form by the middle to latter portion of the week as the wave tracks westward at 15‑20 mph across the eastern and central tropical Atlantic. The center assigns a 50 percent chance of development within the next seven days.

Low pressure southeast of Bermuda

The second area of interest is a broad low‑pressure zone located a few hundred miles southeast of Bermuda. Forecast models give this system a 20 percent chance of developing within the next two days and a 30 percent chance over the seven‑day period. While still uncertain, the proximity to Bermuda means local authorities and residents should stay alert for any rapid changes.

Non‑tropical low west of Portugal

The third system is a non‑tropical low‑pressure area situated a few hundred miles west of the Portuguese coast. The NHC estimates a 10 percent chance of development during the next week. Though the likelihood is low, the system could affect maritime traffic and coastal weather patterns in the eastern Atlantic.

What residents can do

WPBF 25 encourages viewers to stay tuned for updates both on‑air and online. The station’s weather team will provide the latest alerts, and the WPBF 25 News app offers real‑time notifications for any changes in the outlook. Residents in vulnerable coastal areas should review emergency plans, secure property, and keep emergency supplies on hand.

Looking ahead

As the Atlantic hurricane season moves toward its most active period, the NHC will continue to monitor these systems closely. Even with modest development odds, the potential for rapid intensification remains, especially for the African wave that could benefit from warm sea‑surface temperatures later in the week. The public is urged to follow official forecasts and heed any watches or warnings issued by the National Weather Service.
