National Aviary invites locals to name new skunk siblings

The National Aviary, Pittsburgh’s premier wildlife sanctuary, announced the arrival of two new animal ambassadors: a pair of striped skunk sisters born at the Cincinnati Zoo in April. While the Aviary is best known for its collection of more than 500 birds, the addition of these mammals expands its educational outreach on habitat biodiversity.

Community naming contest opens

Visitors and online supporters can submit name ideas until noon on September 14 via a Google form provided by the Aviary. After the submission window closes, the animal‑care team will review the entries and select six finalists—three pairs of names. Starting September 15, the Aviary will host a paid voting period where participants can cast up to five votes for $5. Voters may purchase additional voting bundles, and the contest will remain open until early October, when the official names are announced.

Why the skunks matter

Striped skunks are native to much of North America and play a vital role in controlling insect populations and dispersing seeds. By featuring the skunks, the Aviary hopes to highlight the interconnectedness of wildlife habitats and the importance of protecting ecosystems beyond the avian world. Educational signage and interactive programs will accompany the skunks’ exhibit, giving families and school groups a chance to learn about nocturnal mammals and the challenges they face in the wild.

How to get involved

Those interested in participating can visit aviary.org for contest details, voting instructions, and additional information about upcoming events at the facility. The Aviary also encourages volunteers to assist with the skunk exhibit, offering hands‑on experience for anyone passionate about wildlife conservation.

Supporting local wildlife education

The National Aviary, located on the North Shore of the Allegheny River, has long been a community hub for environmental education. The skunk naming contest is another example of how the institution engages Pittsburgh residents, families, and schoolchildren in stewardship of the natural world. By inviting the public to name the skunks, the Aviary reinforces its mission to foster a deeper appreciation for biodiversity while providing a fun, family‑friendly activity.

For more information on the naming contest, upcoming exhibits, and volunteer opportunities, please visit the Aviary’s website or call the visitor center at (412) 555‑1234.
