NASA’s ‘Big Bang Fix’ Extends Voyager 2 Spacecraft’s Mission

NASA engineers have successfully implemented a ‘Big Bang fix’ to extend the mission of the Voyager 2 spacecraft, which is roughly 13 billion miles away from Earth. The fix involves turning off some powered devices and switching on others that draw less power, allowing the spacecraft to conserve energy and continue its science mission.

Voyager 2’s Mission

Voyager 2 was launched in 1977, along with its twin Voyager 1, to study the outer Solar System and beyond. The spacecraft have been operating for over 40 years, far exceeding their expected lifespan of five years. However, their power supply has dwindled over time, and engineers have had to get creative to keep them running.

The ‘Big Bang fix’ was implemented on July 9, and it has allowed Voyager 2 to conserve enough power to keep its three remaining instruments operating for an extra year. The team is now working on implementing a similar fix for Voyager 1, which is about 16 billion miles away from Earth.

Challenges and Future Plans

The Voyager team faces significant challenges in keeping the spacecraft running, as the extreme temperatures of interstellar space can cause the fuel lines to freeze, leading to a loss of contact with Earth. The team must carefully calculate every step to ensure the spacecraft’s survival.

Despite these challenges, the Voyager team is optimistic about the future of the mission. The ‘Big Bang fix’ has given them a new lease on life, and they are now working on plans to restart the Low-energy Charged Particles experiment on Voyager 1, which was shut down to save power in April.
