NASA and Arizona firm Katalyst halt rescue attempt for aging Swift space telescope

NASA announced Wednesday that the LINK satellite, launched on July 3 to rescue the decades‑old Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, will not attempt the planned capture and boost of the telescope. The decision follows ongoing attitude‑control issues that have left the satellite spinning and unable to rendezvous with Swift on schedule.

Background on the Swift Observatory

Swift, launched in 2004, has served as a versatile astrophysics platform, detecting gamma‑ray bursts and other high‑energy cosmic events. After more than 22 years in low‑Earth orbit, atmospheric drag—exacerbated by heightened solar activity—has lowered its altitude below the safe threshold of roughly 185 miles (300 kilometers). NASA now expects the observatory to re‑enter Earth’s atmosphere and burn up later in 2026.

LINK’s ambitious rescue plan

Arizona‑based Katalyst Space Technologies designed, built, and launched LINK in a record nine‑month timeline. The satellite rode aboard a Northrop Grumman Pegasus XL rocket, which was air‑launched from the company’s modified L‑1011 Stargazer aircraft. LINK’s mission was to approach Swift, survey potential grappling points, and then physically attach to the telescope to raise its orbit.

Within weeks of launch, LINK began to spin out of control. Katalyst engineers regained partial control, but the delay pushed the planned rendezvous back by about a month. Despite the setback, NASA and Katalyst initially indicated they would still attempt the rescue.

Why the mission was called off

On Wednesday, both agencies cited “ongoing attitude control issues” as the reason LINK will not attempt the capture. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said the effort was a “smart risk” worth taking, but the outcome did not meet the original goal. He emphasized that the experience gained will inform future in‑space servicing operations, a capability the United States is eager to develop.

Isaacman added that the team will continue with a demonstration flight, using LINK to approach Swift without attempting a grapple. The data collected will help refine techniques for future satellite servicing missions, even though Swift was not originally designed for such operations.

Implications for U.S. space industry

While Swift’s scientific work will cease, NASA officials stressed that the broader fleet of active observatories will fill the gap. The agency also highlighted how the rapid development of LINK showcases the growing strength of America’s commercial space sector.

“Building, testing, and operating this mission has already strengthened America’s space industry pipeline,” said Shawn Domagal‑Goldman, director of NASA’s Astrophysics Division. “We remain committed to supporting commercial vendors as they tackle difficult tasks that push the boundaries of what’s possible.”

Looking ahead

The lessons from LINK’s attempted rescue are expected to shape a repeatable playbook for future proximity operations, including potential on‑orbit servicing of other aging satellites. Katalyst’s CEO Ghonhee Lee expressed pride in the milestones achieved and confidence that the knowledge gained will translate into durable, repeatable capabilities for the nation’s space endeavors.

For now, the Swift Observatory will continue its final observations until atmospheric re‑entry, marking the end of a distinguished era in high‑energy astrophysics.
