Naperville Public Safety Open House Returns Sep. 26 with Fire and Police Displays

Naperville’s Public Safety Department is opening its doors to the community for the annual Open House on Saturday, September 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will be held at the Public Safety Campus, 1380 Aurora Avenue, and is designed as a family‑friendly showcase of fire‑prevention and crime‑prevention resources.

Hands‑on learning for families and youth

Visitors of all ages will have the chance to explore a wide range of fire and police vehicles and equipment. If available, the city’s beautifully restored 1924 Ahrens‑Fox fire engine – the department’s second motorized apparatus – will be on display, offering a tangible glimpse of firefighting history.

Popular demonstrations include fingerprint‑lifting stations, where participants can see how investigators collect evidence, and interactive safety drills. Children can meet the beloved mascots Sparky the fire dog and McGruff the crime‑prevention dog, while food trucks provide refreshments throughout the day.

Why the Open House matters

Naperville officials emphasize that a safe community begins with an informed public. By inviting residents to see the tools and tactics used by first responders, the department hopes to empower families to “Prepare, Practice, and Prevent” fire and crime in their own neighborhoods.

“Our community is the first line of defense,” said a department spokesperson. “When families understand how to respond to emergencies and recognize potential hazards, we all become stronger and safer.”

Practical safety tips and resources

In addition to vehicle displays, the Open House will feature brief workshops on home fire‑safety checks, proper use of smoke detectors, and basic self‑defense strategies. Attendees can pick up printed safety guides, ask questions of trained officers and firefighters, and learn how to report suspicious activity.

The event also offers a chance for local scouting groups and youth organizations to earn community‑service hours while engaging in educational activities.

Plan your visit

The Open House is free and open to the public. Parking is available on‑site, and the campus is fully accessible for individuals with disabilities. For more information, visit www.naperville.il.us or contact Julie Smith at [email protected].

Mark your calendars and join your neighbors for a day of learning, fun, and community pride as Naperville showcases the dedication of its fire and police professionals.
