After 40 years in Congress, retiring Democratic Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California will not be returning to Congress in January. Instead, she will be helping to create the Nancy Pelosi Institute at the University of California, Berkeley, which is dedicated to research, learning, and civic engagement.
Institute Details
The institute, slated to open in January 2027, will focus on issues such as human rights, challenges to democracy, climate change, and economic income inequity. Pelosi was approached by a group of administrators and professors at Berkeley almost a year ago with the idea of the institute.
Pelosi agreed to raise $25 million before the announcement, which she did “quite easily.” The university said in a press release that this is a $50 million campaign. The institute will not be a “brick-and-mortar thing” but rather “programmatic.” Pelosi will bring high-profile people from both parties to visit and lecture at Berkeley and will even co-teach a class with professor Eric Schickler.
