A second ransom note regarding the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie, indicated that she died, reports say.
The Guthrie family received two notes in the days after Nancy Guthrie was abducted from her Tucson-area home in the early morning hours of Feb. 1. Both notes were sent to media outlets in Tucson and were determined as potentially credible by investigators.
Investigation Ongoing
The first note demanded cryptocurrency for Nancy Guthrie’s return. The second note said she had died shortly after her abduction, but did not include an apology or request for payment in exchange for her body, news reports say.
After the second note was sent, Savannah Guthrie posted an Instagram video featuring her brother, Camron, and sister, Annie, saying the family would “pay” for their mother’s return.
The FBI released surveillance videos of a masked person wearing a handgun holster outside Nancy Guthrie’s front door the night she vanished. A porch camera recorded video of a person with a backpack who was wearing a ski mask, long pants, a jacket and gloves.
The FBI said the suspect in the surveillance footage is a man about 5 feet, 9 inches tall with a medium build.
While no suspects have been identified in the case, a $100,000 reward has been offered by the FBI for any information leading to Nancy Guthrie’s recovery or arrest. The Guthrie family has since offered an increased $1 million reward and donated $500,000 to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.
Authorities maintain that the investigation is active and ongoing. Anyone with information that could help investigators can call 1-800-CALL-FBI or 520-351-4900. You can also submit information at tips.fbi.gov.
