Running back Najee Harris is set to join the New York Giants on a one‑year contract, according to multiple media reports on Tuesday. The 28‑year‑old veteran will be coached by John Harbaugh, marking the second consecutive season he will play under a Harbaugh—last year he was with Jim Harbaugh’s Los Angeles Chargers.
Harris worked out for the Giants on Monday, roughly 11 months after returning from an Achilles injury. While the financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, the former first‑round pick from the 2021 draft brings a proven track record to the team.
Career highlights
Harris was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft and earned a Pro Bowl nod as a rookie. He rushed for more than 1,000 yards in each of his four seasons with the Steelers (2021‑2024) before moving to the Chargers, where he appeared in three games last season.
To date, Harris has accumulated 4,373 rushing yards and 28 rushing touchdowns, along with 183 receptions for 1,174 receiving yards and six receiving touchdowns across 71 career games, 68 of which he started.
Coach Harbaugh’s assessment
Giants head coach John Harbaugh said, “I felt like the hair on the back of my neck stood up when I saw him over there, you know? He’s a big dude. He’s not back 100 percent. He’s not in football shape yet. So, if we are able to do something, it’ll be a process. But that would be a guy that has a lot of experience. He’s a decorated veteran. And with those guys, generally, you just have to kind of see where they’re at when you get them. Sometimes it works out great, sometimes it’s just OK, and other times it doesn’t work out. Based on the workout, I would say we feel like he’s got a shot. We’ll just have to see how it goes.”
Harris’s addition gives the Giants a seasoned running back with a history of production, though his recovery from injury will be closely monitored as the season approaches.
