Mysterious Sonic Boom Rattles Massachusetts Residents

On Saturday afternoon, residents throughout Massachusetts were startled by a loud boom that resonated across the state. The source of this mysterious sound remains unclear, though early indications suggest it might have been caused by a meteor entering the atmosphere.

Community Reactions and Theories

Witnesses from various towns, including Melrose, Wellesley, and Newtonville, reported their homes shaking significantly. Many initially thought a tree had fallen or a transformer had exploded. “The whole house, actually all houses in the neighborhood, shook. Much louder than a transformer exploding and definitely not an earthquake,” shared a resident from Melrose.

At approximately 2:11 p.m., the NOAA’s GOES-19 weather satellite detected a burst over the Massachusetts coast, aligning with the time of the reported boom. This has led meteorologists from StormTeam 5 to hypothesize that an exploding meteor might be responsible, although confirmation is still pending.

Official Response and Public Safety

The Massachusetts Office of Public Safety and Security received numerous reports of the boom and accompanying ground tremors. However, they assured the public that there are no known emergencies related to these reports and no immediate threats to public safety. They continue to collaborate with local, state, and federal partners to determine the cause.

Interestingly, a similar sonic event was reported in South Carolina earlier in the week, suggesting a possible pattern of atmospheric disturbances.

Awaiting Further Information

WCVB has reached out to state officials, the Weston Observatory, and the U.S. Geological Survey for more details. As investigations continue, residents are left to speculate about the cause of this unusual event, with many hoping for a definitive explanation soon.
