Myanmar junta chief-turned-president Min Aung Hlaing has left for Russia for his first official visit to the country since assuming the presidency in April, according to state media.
International Legitimacy
Min Aung Hlaing, who has been the subject of Western sanctions, has been seeking international legitimacy since winning a vote in parliament to become president. This trip marks his fifth official visit to a foreign country since becoming president, with previous trips to India, China, Laos, and Thailand.
Russia and Myanmar have been strengthening their ties in recent years, with Russia providing army training and university scholarships to thousands of Myanmar soldiers. The two countries have also signed agreements on investment cooperation and the construction of a small-scale nuclear power plant in Myanmar.
Min Aung Hlaing’s visit includes a Myanmar-Russia business forum, where he will be joined by the chief minister of the Tanintharyi region and the head of Myanmar’s aerospace agency.
