Mud‑Soaked Day 3 of Riot Fest Highlights Young Local Band Largemouth

Douglass Park remained a battlefield of mud on Sunday, the final day of the 21st annual Riot Fest. Steady rain had turned the festival’s main thoroughfares into slick, sticky trenches, yet organizers kept the music rolling past the scheduled 10 p.m. close.

Young Punk Powerhouse Takes the Stage

At 2:15 p.m., the Rebel stage welcomed Largemouth, the youngest act ever to play Riot Fest. The three‑brother trio—16‑year‑old vocalist Jorgie, 15‑year‑old guitarist Jeremy, and 11‑year‑old drummer Oliver Santopoalo—joined forces with percussionist Oliver Mendoza (16) and guitarist Diangelo Esquivel (18) to form a five‑piece punk unit.

Clad in matching black pants and olive‑green tops, the teens launched into originals like “Dirty Friend” and “Keep a Secret,” then closed their 30‑minute set with the unreleased track “Do You Love Yourself.” Audience members were encouraged to two‑step and even crowd‑surf, a feat made all the more impressive by Oliver’s age.

Community Support Fuels the Performance

Long‑time Riot Fest attendees Anne Falk Grace and Jason Grace discovered Largemouth through a personal connection— their daughter is dating rhythm guitarist Esquivel. “It’s the first time I’ve ever come to Riot Fest and had somebody to pull for,” Jason Grace said. “Please, just let Largemouth play. Let the local kids play.” Their enthusiasm reflected a broader sentiment among families who braved the mud to support home‑grown talent.

Local fan Alex Nieto, who stumbled upon the set while seeking shelter from the rain, summed it up: “I found out they’re super young. That’s really dope. They went crazy.” The band earned its spot on the lineup after winning a community‑band competition earlier this summer, which highlighted acts from North Lawndale and Little Village.

Other Acts Persevere Through the Sludge

Despite the conditions, other stages stayed active. At 2:35 p.m., folk‑punk outfit Sincere Engineer delivered a spirited set, playing fan favorites such as “Cooler” and “Twist My Tongue.” New Zealand indie band The Beths followed with bright pop melodies, while legendary punk icon Patti Smith took the Rise stage later in the evening, reminding attendees she’s a “bad‑weather girl.”

Even celebrity headliners William Shatner and Alanis Morissette pressed on. Shatner’s metal‑themed band, The *uckers, roared through covers like “Crazy Train” and “Ace of Spades,” while Morissette performed a nostalgic mix of ’90s hits.

Personal Moments Amid the Mud

Amid the soggy chaos, love found a way. Garfield Park resident Brianna Patton married partner Joseph Barker in the festival’s chapel, fulfilling a dream she first had at the 2022 show. Dressed in a floor‑length black lace gown, the couple exchanged vows before 3:30 p.m., their ceremony delayed only by the weather.

“It’s f—ing awesome,” Brianna Barker said, laughing as rain continued to fall. “If you knew me, you know this is on brand—just a magical moment.”

Festival Outlook

While the mud and schedule shifts tested patience, the spirit of Riot Fest remained unshaken. Attendees navigated the slick grounds, families cheered local talent, and the park’s iconic stages echoed with music from punk to pop. The festival’s resilience underscores Chicago’s vibrant cultural scene, even when the weather turns against it.
