Mt. Pleasant Township employees recently uncovered a time capsule buried in 1976, revealing a treasure trove of artifacts and documents from the community’s past. The capsule, which was sealed on October 10, 1976, was opened on a recent Saturday morning, with over 100 people in attendance.
Uncovering the Past
The capsule contained a variety of items, including a book from former state senator Austin Murphy, letters from students, newspaper front pages celebrating the bicentennial, and a pin from state transportation officials promising ‘Better Roads.’ Other relics included a bicentennial flag, Polaroid photos of the time capsule’s planning committee, a 1976 primary election return sheet, and a phone book.
A sealed bottle of Old Grandpappy’s whiskey, with a price tag of $9.06, was also found in the capsule. Township officials are considering auctioning it off during the Hickory Apple Festival to raise money for the event or a charity.
A New Time Capsule
The community is now preparing to create a new time capsule, which will be filled with items from today’s Mt. Pleasant Township. Students from the Fort Cherry School District are being asked to write letters to their future selves, just as children from 1976 did before. The new capsule will be sealed and opened in 50 years, in time for America’s tricentennial celebration in 2076.
