A new movie, ‘The Death of Robin Hood’, offers a darker take on the classic English legend. Directed by Michael Sarnoski, the film stars Hugh Jackman as a grizzled and violent Robin Hood.
A Different Robin Hood
This version of the story is far removed from the traditional tales of a heroic outlaw stealing from the rich to give to the poor. Instead, Jackman’s Robin Hood is a ruthless killer who can’t even remember how many people he’s killed.
The film takes its title from one of the original ballads about Robin Hood, which portrayed him as a yeoman rather than the noble outlaw of later stories. Sarnoski’s film explores the idea that the stories we tell about heroes like Robin Hood are often far from the truth.
Despite its thought-provoking themes, the movie is a slow and brutal slog, with too much emphasis on violence and not enough on character development. The cinematography is striking, with beautiful shots of the Northern Ireland landscape, but it’s not enough to save the film from its overall bleakness.
