Mount Greenwood Wine & Whiskey Walk Aims to Boost Businesses Hit by 111th St Rail Closure

Mount Greenwood residents and business owners are rallying around a festive solution to a sudden transportation headache. On Thursday, 6‑10 p.m., the neighborhood will host a Wine & Whiskey Walk along 111th Street, inviting shoppers to sample local drinks while supporting the 29 participating merchants.

Rail crossing closure disrupts daily life

Monday’s unexpected shutdown of the railroad crossing at 111th Street and Sacramento Avenue for maintenance was announced without warning. The closure, slated to last two weeks, forced drivers to detour through neighboring Morgan Park and created a traffic nightmare for commuters and customers alike.

Alderman Matt O’Shea (19th Ward) confirmed the work was necessary but expressed concern over the lack of advance notice for businesses that line the affected stretch. “We understand the need for safety, but we also need to protect our local economy,” he said.

Business owners voice frustration

Christine LeFils, executive director of the Mount Greenwood Community and Business Association and co‑owner of Hippo’s Bar (3011 W 111th St.), described the closure as a “major hurdle” for already‑struggling shops. “Even a heads‑up would have let us prepare and inform our customers,” she explained.

Local entrepreneur Sabrina Davis, who runs Chicago’s Beauty Boutique (3142 W 111th St.), echoed the sentiment. Her wellness spa, which relies on timed appointments, has seen clients arrive late or miss sessions entirely. “It impacts not just one client but the entire schedule for the day,” Davis said.

Vicki Bradley, owner of Bradley Wellness (11104 S Troy St.), added that intermittent train stoppages have repeatedly disrupted her patients’ treatment plans over the past year.

Wine & Whiskey Walk offers a hopeful boost

The annual Wine & Whiskey Walk is designed to bring foot traffic back to the corridor while showcasing the neighborhood’s vibrant small‑business scene. LeFils highlighted that the event will feature live music, snacks, and the chance for shoppers to discover stores they might otherwise drive past.

“The idea is to get everyone on 111th Street supporting all the local businesses, seeing things that maybe when they drive in their cars they might not normally notice,” she said.

Tickets are $60 and the event is open to anyone 21 and older. Proceeds will help offset the revenue loss many merchants have experienced since the crossing shut down.

Community spirit in action

Beyond the immediate economic relief, the walk underscores Mount Greenwood’s strong sense of community and family‑focused values. Residents are encouraged to bring friends and family, enjoy responsibly, and support neighbors who have kept the neighborhood’s traditional, family‑oriented character alive for decades.
