Mount Greenwood residents rallied to rescue a family of baby ducks trapped in a sewer on the 10400 block of South Hamlin Avenue. Kylee Tenison, a junior at the University of Iowa, noticed a duck circling the sewer while driving to work and realized the duck’s babies might have fallen in.
Tenison and her sister pulled over to investigate and heard quacking from inside the sewer. They called 311 to report the trapped ducklings and posted about the situation on a local Facebook group.
Community Comes Together
Within minutes, the post started gaining traction, with neighbors responding and offering to help. About 30 minutes later, Tenison learned that people had helped rescue the ducklings and reunite them with their mother.
Kate Barone, another Mount Greenwood resident, saw the post and decided to drive past the block while taking her son to summer camp. She saw the reunited family crossing 103rd Street near Lawndale Avenue and was moved by the scene.
The rescued ducklings and their mother were later spotted swimming in Lake Marion at Saint Xavier University, a popular spot for wildlife in the area.
Tenison expressed gratitude for the community’s efforts in rescuing the baby ducks, saying, ‘The Mount Greenwood community is awesome.’ The incident highlights the power of community and the importance of looking out for one another, even in unexpected situations.
