Southfield, Mich. – Late Saturday night, a motorist who pulled over to aid victims of a two‑vehicle crash on the southbound Lodge Freeway (M‑10) near 9 Mile Road was tragically killed when another vehicle struck the Good Samaritan.
Crash details
Michigan State Police troopers arrived shortly after 11:30 p.m. to find one vehicle disabled and blocking the two left lanes of the freeway. A passing driver stopped on the right shoulder, exited the car and crossed the freeway to offer assistance to those involved.
While the helper was providing aid, a second vehicle traveling behind the disabled car swerved to avoid the obstruction and collided with the pedestrian. Troopers, Southfield police officers, and Southfield Fire/EMS personnel immediately began lifesaving measures, including CPR, but the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police response
Authorities reported that the driver of the vehicle that struck the helper remained at the scene and fully cooperated with investigators. Early indications suggest that neither alcohol nor drugs played a role in the incident.
The Lodge Freeway was closed for several hours while investigators processed the scene. Traffic resumed at approximately 4:30 a.m. on Sunday morning.
Community impact
The fatality underscores the dangers faced by everyday citizens who step forward to help others in emergencies. Local officials have reminded motorists to exercise extreme caution when entering active traffic lanes, especially on high‑speed freeways.
Southfield Mayor Michael J. McGinnis expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased and praised the bravery of the individual who attempted to assist. “Our community is built on the willingness of neighbors to look out for one another,” he said. “We must also remember to protect ourselves while doing good.”
Investigation continues
The crash remains under active investigation by Michigan State Police and local law‑enforcement agencies. No charges have been filed at this time, and officials will release further details as they become available.
