Montgomery, Ala. – On Thursday evening, three local nonprofit organizations joined forces to kick off Breast Cancer Awareness Month in the River Region. The Joy to Life Foundation, Women of Hope and Sista’s Can Survive set up at the Shoppes at Eastchase fountain, where volunteers illuminated the water in pink and shared stories of hope and resilience.
Survivors share empowerment
Joy Blondheim, co‑founder and director of the Joy to Life Foundation, explained why the gathering matters to the community. “It means everything to survivors to come together and celebrate, to be able to tell their story and hear other stories,” she said. “It gives a survivor just a sense of empowerment. They gather strength from one another, we do, we gather strength from each other.”
The evening featured a short program of speakers, live music and a symbolic lighting of the Main Street fountain pink – a visual reminder of the month’s focus on early detection, treatment support and remembrance of those lost to the disease.
Upcoming events keep momentum going
Joy to Life has a full calendar of activities planned for October. The organization’s annual walk is scheduled for Saturday, October 24, at 17 Springs in Millbrook, offering another opportunity for residents to walk side‑by‑side, raise funds and spread awareness.
Women of Hope and Sista’s Can Survive will also host educational workshops later in the month, providing information on screening guidelines, survivorship resources and ways families can support loved ones facing a breast cancer diagnosis.
Community partners rally behind the cause
Local businesses and civic groups have pledged support, donating supplies, refreshments and volunteer hours. The Shoppes at Eastchase management offered the fountain venue free of charge, underscoring the partnership between the private sector and nonprofit community leaders.
“When we see our downtown lit up in pink, it sends a powerful message that Montgomery cares about the health of its families,” said a representative from the city’s Chamber of Commerce, who attended the ceremony.
Why awareness matters
Breast cancer remains the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in Alabama. Early detection through regular mammograms can dramatically improve survival rates. By uniting survivors, families and allies, the event aims to encourage women to schedule screenings and to remind the community that support is available at every stage of the journey.
Organizers hope the pink‑lit fountain will inspire residents to wear pink throughout October, share their own stories on social media and contribute to fundraising efforts that fund local screening programs and patient assistance grants.
Looking ahead
As the month progresses, the coalition plans to expand its outreach to schools, churches and senior centers, ensuring that the message reaches every corner of the River Region. The collective effort reflects Montgomery’s tradition of faith‑centered service and family‑focused community action.
