Montgomery, Ala. – The Montgomery Gray 8U softball team, a group of 7‑ and 8‑year‑old girls from the city, was honored during a Montgomery City Council meeting on Tuesday after securing the Dixie Softball Darlings World Series championship in Bellevue, Florida.
Path to the State Title
The season began with a district championship win, propelling the team into the Alabama state tournament. In the state competition, Gray defeated teams from Luverne, Troy and Montgomery American to claim the state crown, earning the right to represent Alabama at the national World Series.
World Series Journey
Montgomery Gray’s World Series run was not without adversity. The team lost its opening game, which placed them in the losers’ bracket. Undeterred, the girls rallied, winning consecutive games against opponents from Florida and Louisiana, and even toppling the defending World Series champions from Virginia.
The decisive moment came in the final matchup against a Louisiana team. After falling behind, Gray mounted a dramatic comeback, scoring the winning run to secure a 6‑5 victory and the 8U World Series title.
Community Recognition
City Council members praised the young athletes for their hard work, determination, and sportsmanship. The council’s recognition highlighted the importance of youth athletics in building character and fostering community pride.
Coach and parents expressed gratitude for the support of local fans, volunteers, and sponsors who helped the team travel to Florida and compete at the highest level of youth softball.
Looking Ahead
With the championship secured, the Montgomery Gray girls return home as role models for other young athletes in the area. Their success underscores the value of organized sports in developing teamwork, discipline, and confidence among children.
The team’s achievement will be celebrated at upcoming community events, and the city plans to honor the players further for their representation of Montgomery on a national stage.
