Montgomery County Councilmember Will Jawando Recovering After Heart Attack

ROCKVILLE, MD — Montgomery County Councilmember and Democratic nominee for County Executive Will Jawando is on the mend after suffering a heart attack during his regular weekend pickup basketball game on Saturday, Sept. 5. The councilmember was rushed to The George Washington University Hospital, where physicians placed a stent and reported that his overall health is strong.

Medical update and prognosis

According to an official statement released by Jawando’s office on Monday, the medical team is confident in his full recovery. “His doctors are confident in his full recovery given his strong overall health,” the statement read. Jawando remains hospitalized in stable condition and is expected to be discharged later this week to continue recuperating at home with his wife, Michele, and their children.

Impact on council operations

While Jawando will “adjust office activities in the coming weeks” following his doctor’s guidance, his office emphasized that the councilmember’s staff “remains open, available and ready to help meet the community’s needs.” The statement reassured residents that essential services and constituent assistance will continue without interruption.

Community and colleague response

Jawando’s office expressed gratitude for the swift actions of friends, family, and the hospital staff. “We thank the exceptional doctors, nurses and staff at the hospital, as well as the outpouring of support and prayers from neighbors, colleagues and supporters across the county and state,” the statement said.

Current Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich also issued a statement, offering well wishes. “I was very concerned to hear about Councilmember Will Jawando’s heart attack this weekend, and I’m relieved that he received immediate care and is doing well,” Elrich said. “I’m wishing Will a full and speedy recovery and hope he takes the time he needs to rest and get healthy.”

What this means for residents

Jawando’s continued involvement in county affairs remains a priority for his office. Constituents can still reach out for assistance on local issues ranging from zoning inquiries to public‑safety concerns. The councilmember’s team has pledged to keep communication channels open, ensuring that the community’s needs are addressed even as Jawando focuses on his health.

Family, friends, and supporters have been encouraged to send prayers and messages of encouragement, reinforcing the strong community ties that define Montgomery County. As Jawando works toward a full recovery, his dedication to public service and his upcoming campaign for County Executive remain central to his message of service and stewardship.

Looking ahead

Jawando’s office will provide updates on his health status and any adjustments to his public schedule. Residents are asked to stay tuned for further information and to continue engaging with the council’s regular outreach programs.
