A manhunt is underway in Monaco and neighboring France after an explosion injured three people on Monday evening. The blast occurred in a residential area of Monaco, known for its tight security and luxury lifestyle.
Investigation Ongoing
Christophe Mirmand, minister of state of Monaco, stated that the suspect is believed to have fled to France. The principality is surrounded by the sea on one side and France on the other, with no border checks between the two countries.
Local newspaper Monaco Matin reported that a woman was the most seriously hurt, with part of her lower limbs blown away by the explosion. The three main victims are still in hospital, with a young man less seriously hurt.
French and Ukrainian media have reported that the target of the attack was Vadym Yermolaiev, a Ukrainian-born oligarch who renounced his Ukrainian citizenship and became a citizen of Cyprus. Yermolaiev was placed under Ukrainian sanctions in December 2023 for allegedly doing business in Russian-occupied Crimea.
Prince Albert of Monaco described the attack as an ‘odious act’ and a shock for all in Monaco. The principality is working in close coordination with French authorities to track down the suspect.
