The Madison Metropolitan School District is expanding access to eye care for its students with a new mobile vision clinic. The “Vision Van,” a fully equipped mobile eye‑screening unit, will travel to schools across the district, offering free eye exams and prescription glasses on site.
First stops include Mendota Elementary
Mendota Elementary School was among the first to host the van. Principal Lindsey Jones explained that the screenings take place just outside the school building and typically require 15 to 20 minutes of class time. “We’re really excited that our scholars will be able to see what’s in the classrooms, what’s being presented to them,” Jones said. “We have some kiddos even be able to see the books that are in front of them.”
Addressing barriers for families
School nurse Erin Fuller highlighted a common obstacle for families: finding time to schedule appointments and taking time off work. “The teachers will say, this kid can’t see in the front of the classroom. I’ve moved him up to the front. And then there are so many processes of what to do next,” Fuller noted. The mobile clinic eliminates those hurdles by bringing care directly to the school.
District‑wide impact
Fuller added that the van allows the district to screen every student, something that was not possible with the previous rotation‑based approach. “This opportunity gives us a chance to screen every student. We weren’t able to screen every student,” she said. The plan is for the van to visit schools every other year, ensuring that all students receive regular vision checks.
Students thrilled with new glasses
Students who receive glasses report immediate benefits. “They get the glasses and they put them on, and they look great and then they get to see in the classroom. And that’s just huge,” Fuller said, emphasizing the positive impact on learning and confidence.
Partnerships make it possible
The Vision Van operates in partnership with Combat Blindness International and Vision To Learn. Donations through these organizations cover every step of the process, from screening to the provision of glasses. Vision To Learn works with Warby Parker to supply the free prescription eyewear.
Vision To Learn runs more than 60 mobile clinics in over 18 states, connecting thousands of students to essential vision care. The Madison initiative adds the capital city to that growing network, reinforcing the district’s commitment to student health and academic success.
Looking ahead
District officials see the mobile clinic as a model for future health‑service collaborations. By removing logistical barriers and delivering care where children learn, the Vision Van supports families, strengthens the educational environment, and upholds the community’s dedication to the well‑being of its youngest members.
